Goo

For a couple of days now I’ve heard a lot of people talking about Garrett. What a loving boy Garrett was. What a funny boy Garrett was. What a giving boy and smart boy Garrett was.

I didn’t know a boy named Garrett. I knew a cartoon character come to life simply known as Goo. Goo was a boy that despite his asthma didn’t know the word stop. He was go, go, go all the time. He was a sports lover. He played basketball, and even though he was short…in his head he was 6’ tall and he gave it all he had. Goo played football, and even though he was skinny and small…in his head he was a 250-pound linebacker and he gave it his all. Goo played soccer, maybe not the best player…but in his head he was Pele. He played baseball. Maybe not the superstar, but in his head…he was Willy Mayes and he gave it his all.

If you were to ask a person on the street what came to their mind when they heard the word “goo”, you might get an answer like, “gum stuck to the bottom of your shoe.” That was Goo. Underfoot, sometimes irritating, sometimes, but like that gum, Goo stuck with you. Once he was with you he stuck in your heart and stuck in your mind.

I don’t know if Goo ever thought about what he wanted to do for a career, but I know one thing he wouldn’t have been good at was a lawyer. He was too honest for that. If he had a question for you he asked it. If you asked him a question he gave you an honest and often not very politically correct answer. He never held anything back.

We were talking the other day and I don’t know how heaven works, but I’m sure Goo was greeted at the gates by his Grandpa Mark and his Grandpa Barry. After a short, shy introduction, they escorted him through the gates and Goo immediately wanted to meet God. I can hear the conversation. “Hi God…why is Your robe longer and shinier than mine? Why are You called God? I’ve never met anyone called God before. I’ve seen people called Jesus before which is kind of like Jesus, but I’ve never met anyone called God before. Speaking of Jesus…where is He? Can I meet Him? Does He play baseball?”

I know that wherever Goo is in heaven right now he is running and playing and making the other angels laugh and giving it all he has. We will miss you Goo and if you are looking down on us now and listening, do me a favor. Save me a place on your team.
